Flying Nervousness

Air travel is very important in today's world. People use airplanes for quick and efficient travel anywhere. It may be work related places, vacations spots, or any others. Many people do not enjoy flying in an airplane. The main cause of this is fear. They often feel afraid to be high up in the air. They are also afraid and concerned of accidents that might occur. All these reasons are acceptable but in this post, we will be learning some ways with which you can overcome the fear and nervousness of flight.

What is the cause of fear of flight?

As discussed above, the main reason for the fear among most regarding flying is being in a high altitude or concerned about accidents. Normally, as human beings cannot fly themselves physically, we fear falling down and getting hurt. That is the reason why man invented flying machines or airplanes. The same is not applicable for airplanes since these flying machines are actually good gliders. More about this later in the post.

Another major cause of fear of flight is thinking it to be unsafe. It is true that many fatal accidents had happened in the past. Aviation, like any other business, relies on mistakes made in the past to become more safer. Accidents from the past are the main reasons that make flying safe today. If you do not believe it, air transport is the most safest means of transport. We have made a post about this topic which you can find here.

For commuting between two distant important cities, travelling by air is more safer than driving to them by your car.

Things to understand:

Now, let's look at the things that you need to understand. Airplanes are not like bricks flying through the air. If you make a brick fly with some amount of force acting on it constantly, it will remain in the air. If for some reason, you remove the source of force moving the brick, it is going to stop mid-air and is going to fall down. This is not the case with airplanes. Even if a plane encounters a failure of all of its engines, it is still going to fly very well. Planes are excellent gliders. Normally, a plane flies at an altitude of 30,000 feet. The plane could glide for a long distance before it gets close to the ground. By this time, the plane could reach a runway and land.

The possibilities of being in an accident is very rare. There are various restrictions imposed on air transport for safety reasons. Air transport is the most organized means of transport in the world. Everything is pre-planned and works the way as planned. This also contributes to safety. For example, take the scenario of pilots pre-planning the flight. They check weather information in the departing and landing airports, on the way, and altitudes, etc. With the information, they alter their flight course or altitude to avoid rough weather which may cause turbulence ensuring a smooth flight.

The flight crew on a plane includes pilots and flight attendants. All of their main concern is the safety of the flight. It does not matter where they fly, which airline, duration of flight, etc. Even if it is a 15 hour flight, you need not worry if the pilots may be tired and experience fatigue. Typically in long haul flights like these, there are 3-4 pilots in the plane. While two of them fly, others are able to take controlled rest in the crew bunks. Also, flight attendants are not there in planes just to serve you food and drinks. In an unlikely situation, they are the ones who will guide you to safety. Both pilots and flight attendants are trained for absolute unlikely emergency situations.

Most aircraft that you fly on have many redundant systems. This can be understood by an accident swiss cheese diagram. We have talked about this in our previous posts too. If for example, something fails in the plane, there are multiple other systems providing backup for the lost system. The aircraft also have various safety measures implemented in it which makes flying overall very safe. In the event of covid pandemic during this time, airlines are taking safety in a big way. They are implementing measures to kill viruses by ultraviolet sterilization and tidiness.

Now, most of you will have let gone of your fear and relaxed a little bit. Following are some ways with which you can keep yourself engaged during the flight.

Keeping yourself engaged during the flight:

  • You can bring a device like a tablet or mobile phone which has a movie or songs downloaded. Many airlines also have free wi-fi onboard which means that you can access the internet at a reasonably good speed.
  • The onboard entertainment system is available for everyone even in economy class. There might be a selection of movies, kids shows, or games to keep yourself engaged.
  • Another way is to read a book all along the way by bringing one. Many airlines also do offer newspapers, magazines, etc.
  • The best of the ways is sight-seeing provided its daytime. You can look on oceans, seas, mountains, cities, or even the clouds, etc. You can record them by simply using a mobile phone to make the experience memorable.
